To mark the centenary of Claude Monet’s birth and the 2026 Normandy Impressionist Festival, Jean-Marc de Pas has created a new space dedicated to twenty major painters of the Impressionist era, ranging from pioneers such as Turner and Constable to Post-Impressionists such as Paul Cézanne, Paul Gauguin, Vincent van Gogh and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec.
To create these portraits, Jean-Marc de Pas draws on various iconographic and documentary sources to better capture each artist’s personality.
The sculptor created these portraits in public, immersing himself in a positive energy to capture a presence in clay within a limited timeframe, much like a painter working en plein air. His movements are free as he works with the clay.
Working in a series establishes a dialogue between the painters and their contemporaries, but also between the sculptor and the painters. Set amidst a backdrop of rosebushes in delicate hues and light, colourful perennials, the busts engage in a dialogue with the nature that inspired them.
Here, the garden becomes a living showcase where the memory of the artists blends with the beauty of the plants.
